Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the integration of sensors into smartphones and data collection through their apps has opened a promising avenue to address mental health challenges and diverse healthcare needs. Smartphones, equipped with a variety of sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, offer a unique opportunity for continuous and unobtrusive monitoring of individual behaviors, physiological parameters, and environmental factors. These sensors can capture valuable data related to physical activity, sleep patterns, social interactions, and mood fluctuations, providing insights into the individual's physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, by allowing the actual measurement of the time of use of different applications, they enable the correlation of these variables and the use of certain applications with problems such as anxiety, depression, or addiction to certain technological applications.

This Special Issue aims to explore the advances, challenges, and applications of smartphone-based sensors to monitor and improve mental health outcomes and address various healthcare requirements. Contributions to this Special Issue may include original research, reviews, case studies, and methodologies focused on topics such as:

  • The development and validation of smartphone-based sensor technologies for mental health assessments;
  • Applications of smartphone data/sensors in the early detection and intervention of mental health disorders;
  • Using smartphone data for personalized health interventions;
  • Ethical and privacy considerations when collecting and analyzing data from smartphone sensors for healthcare purposes;
  • Integration of smartphone sensor data with other digital health technologies for comprehensive healthcare solutions.

We invite researchers to present their innovative work and contribute to improving our understanding and utilization of smartphone-based sensors to promote mental health and meet diverse healthcare needs. By exploring the transformative potential of smartphone technology to shape the future of healthcare delivery and patient well-being, quantitative studies, qualitative studies, and case studies are welcome in this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
