Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The global increase in urban density, the concentration of critical infrastructure in seismically active regions, and the emphasis on research on seismic hazard, including anthropogenic hazard, have magnified the potential impact of seismic events and placed demands on increasingly accurate descriptions and understandings of seismic sources. Traditional, sparse seismic networks often struggle to provide sufficient information for high-level seismic interpretation, leading to a need for sufficiently dense, yet cost-effective, monitoring solutions.

Internet connectivity and advanced artificial intelligence are transforming seismic interpretation from individual stations to the seismic network as a whole. Therefore, the optimal establishment of seismic networks becomes the most important issue.

This Special Issue, “Sensor-Based Seismic Network: Issues and Challenges” aims to present and disseminate on the one hand the most recent advances related to the deployment and operation of advanced seismic sensing technologies including various global positioning systems or fiber optic based sensors, and on the other hand, the design of a network of seismic sensors, their density and spatial distribution taking into account the location constraints that require the quality of seismic interpretation, and join the network in one system, e.g., by Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.

Such tasks offer opportunities to refine existing algorithms and apply deep learning models, while for practitioners, they promise scalable algorithms for local and global networks.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Next-Generation Seismic Sensors: Development and benchmarking of, e.g., MEMS accelerometers, smartphone accelerometers.
  • Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS): Applications of networks of fiber-optic cables.
  • AI and Machine Learning for Seismology: Automated event detection and early warning algorithms based on a sparse seismic network.
  • IoT-Based Seismic Frameworks: Real-time data streaming, Edge computing, and cloud-based architecture for seismic detection and earthquake or tsunami warning systems.
  • GNSS Applications to Seismicity and Seismogeodesy: High-rate global positioning systems for real-time ground movement estimation and earthquake early warning.
  • Optimization of the seismic network: for seismic events detection, location accuracy, and inversion of focal and other source parameters.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
