Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wetland ecosystems—including coastal wetlands, peatlands, floodplain wetlands, lakeside marshes, and constructed wetlands—provide essential services for biodiversity conservation, shoreline protection, hydrological regulation, carbon sequestration, and climate-change mitigation. However, wetland ecosystems are increasingly affected by land reclamation, aquaculture and urban expansion, altered hydrological connectivity, biological invasion, pollution, sea-level rise, and extreme climate events. Accurate, timely, and multi-scale wetland information is therefore essential for understanding wetland dynamics and supporting conservation, restoration, and sustainable management.

This Special Issue aims to bring together recent advances in remote sensing methods, data products, and applications for wetland ecosystem monitoring and assessment. It is closely aligned with the scope of Remote Sensing by emphasizing multi-platform Earth observation, multi-source data fusion, intelligent image interpretation, time-series analysis, and quantitative retrieval of wetland ecological and biophysical parameters. Contributions that integrate remote sensing with geomatics and GIScience, particularly geospatial data integration, spatial analysis and modeling, and the assessment of spatial data quality, accuracy, and uncertainty, are also encouraged.

We welcome original research articles, review papers, and short communications addressing, but not limited to, wetland mapping and change detection; mangrove, salt-marsh, tidal-flat, peatland, and floodplain monitoring; wetland vegetation structure, species composition, biodiversity, functional traits, biomass, and carbon storage retrieval; hydrological connectivity, inundation dynamics and ecohydrological processes; wetland degradation, restoration, resilience, and conservation effectiveness assessment; optical, SAR, LiDAR, hyperspectral, UAV, and high-resolution satellite data applications; AI, deep learning, foundation models, cloud computing, and digital-twin approaches for wetland remote sensing; and applications for climate adaptation, blue carbon assessment, habitat quality evaluation, disaster risk reduction, and policy-oriented wetland management.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
