Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, dental implantology has witnessed significant advancements driven by technological innovations, aiming to enhance treatment outcomes, patient satisfaction, and overall clinical success. Among these advancements, custom abutments have emerged as a pivotal component in the restoration of dental implants, offering tailored solutions to meet the unique anatomical and aesthetic needs of individual patients.
Custom abutments, fabricated using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology, represent a paradigm shift in implant dentistry by providing precise and personalised restorative options. Unlike traditional stock abutments, which are prefabricated and come in standardised shapes and sizes, custom abutments are meticulously designed based on digital scans or impressions of the patient's implant site, ensuring optimal fit, function, and aesthetics. Although customized abutments can offer clinical advantages in terms of soft tissue response and abutment design, the use of stock abutments still remains a clinically acceptable treatment in terms of prosthetic procedure and cost-effectiveness to restore cement-retained implant-supported restorations.
The aim of this Special Issue is to analyse and critically appraise the current body of literature pertaining to custom and stock abutments, supporting cement-retained implant-supported restorations. Specifically, we invite authors to submit original research articles, randomised controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, critical reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses focusing on key aspects, including their design principles, fabrication techniques, clinical applications, aesthetic outcomes, functional performance, biological and mechanical complications, and cost-effectiveness, in order to provide clinicians with evidence-based insights into the efficacy and utility of stock and custom abutments in modern implant dentistry, thus facilitating informed decision making and enhancing patient care.
