Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce an upcoming Special Issue of Plants entitled “Biocontrol of Toxicogenic Fungi in Vegetables Through the Use of Antagonistic Microorganisms”. Mycotoxins, secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi, have a significant impact on the quality and safety of food products worldwide. These toxins are widely distributed across a variety of agricultural crops including cereals (corn, rice, wheat, and barley), lentils, fruits, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, grapes, coffee, cotton seeds, and spices (pepper, paprika, and ginger). The use of synthetic fungicides represents the primary strategy for controlling pre- and post-harvest fungal diseases in several vegetables. However, an increase in public concern regarding the negative human health and environmental effects associated with the use of pesticides in agriculture has shown the urgent need to identify alternative control methods. The biocontrol of toxigenic fungi in vegetables using antagonistic microorganisms could represent an alternative to chemical methods. Biological control in sensu strictu involves microorganisms known as biocontrol agents (BCAs), which are mainly yeasts, bacteria, and filamentous fungi that have certain properties. This Special Issue will present advanced studies, methods, tools, and innovations in the field of the biological control of toxicogenic fungi in pre- and post-harvest conditions using microbial antagonists. We look forward to receiving your contributions and sharing them with our community of researchers, students, and technicians.
