Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue is dedicated to presenting innovative research findings and practical advancements in the area of “Optical Networks and Communications”: as global connectivity demands continue to grow exponentially, optical technologies have become indispensable to addressing the challenges of bandwidth scalability, network reliability, and service quality in modern communication networks.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for researchers and practitioners to share knowledge, explore emerging trends, and propose solutions to critical challenges in optical networks and communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Optical network resource allocation schemes and algorithms;
- The design and evaluation of optical network architectures;
- Protection, restoration, and resiliency mechanisms in optical networks;
- Optical switching technologies;
- High-capacity data center interconnections;
- Fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) and optical access networks;
- The convergence of optical, mobile, and wireless networks (5G/6G);
- Free-space optical communications and applications;
- Elastic optical networks and spectral efficiency optimization;
- Failure detection, monitoring, and recovery in optical systems;
- Energy-efficient optical network designs;
- Optical security and network defense strategies;
- The integration of optical technologies with grid and cloud computing;
- Advances in radio-over-fiber systems;
- Emerging paradigms for optical and wireless convergence;
- Quantum communications over optical infrastructure;
- Joint optical communications and sensing.
We invite original research papers, reviews, and case studies that advance the state of the art in these domains. Contributions showcasing experimental implementations, theoretical advancements, simulation studies, and real-world deployments are highly encouraged.
We look forward to receiving your submissions to drive forward innovation in the rapidly evolving field of optical networks and communications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
