Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the century since animal insulin first became commercially available for the treatment of patients with Type 1 diabetes, innumerable investigators have sought to improve life-saving insulin treatment. Insulin itself has been genetically modified to tailor its pharmacokinetics to patient needs, and various excipients may be added to alter its absorption. In large part because of convenience, subcutaneous (SC) injection remains the predominant route of administration, but additional routes (oral, intradermal, intraperitoneal, vaginal, inhalatory, etc.) and novel delivery methods (pens, precision pumps, and microneedles) are often coupled with continuous glucose monitors by sophisticated algorithms, rendering them “smart”. Utilizing donated, isolated Islets of Langerhans as implants, either in the portal circulation or within encapsulating devices implanted SC, can provide the patient with a self-regulating insulin factory. Successes, particularly with portal islets, have encouraged scientists to pursue beta-cell-like stem cells as a potentially unlimited supply.

In this Special Issue, we seek to inform the scientific, medical, and public communities of recent advances fueling these applications and innovations, from computer modeling to novel pharmaceutics and cells to implantable micropumps directed by built-in glucose sensors and informed by AI. We encourage submissions of novel concepts ranging from hypotheses to clinically translated applications. All types of articles will be considered.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
