Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The gut and liver are closely connected through the gut–liver axis, created by the portal circulation that transports nutrients, microbial metabolites, and toxic substances, and the biliary enterohepatic circulation. The intestinal microbiome plays a crucial role in regulating liver physiology, influencing processes such as lipid metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and detoxification. Alterations in microbiota composition (dysbiosis) can lead to inflammation and liver diseases such as metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), cirrhosis, and chronic hepatitis. Microbial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, endotoxins, and modified bile acids, modulate immune function and intestinal barrier integrity. Nutritional factors, such as the intake of fibers, fats, and sugars, directly affect the microbiome and indirectly impact liver health. Recent studies suggest that targeted interventions on the gut microbiota, including fecal microbiota transplantation, may represent promising therapeutic strategies for liver diseases.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interactions between the intestinal microbiome, host physiology, and nutritional factors involved in liver function. We encourage the submission of original research articles, reviews, and systematic reviews covering a wide range of related topics.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
