Special Issue Information

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top 10 global public health challenges and ranks among the three highest-priority health threats, resulting in an estimated 1.27 million deaths worldwide each year.

Stemming from the multiple resistance mechanisms of pathogens, multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections lead to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Certain pathogens, such as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and Acinetobacter baumannii, are included in the 2024 list of high-priority antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens that pose the greatest threat to public health. Gram-negative bacteria are also implicated in the development of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).

In this Special Issue, we invite the submission of publications on the latest research regarding:

  • Epidemiological trends in AMR, with a focus on multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and pan-drug-resistant (PDR) strains of Gram-negative bacteria.
  • Molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in Gram-negative bacteria and therapeutic options for these infections.
  • Applications of novel diagnosis and detection methods of the resistance phenotypes of these high-priority pathogens.
  • Prevention and control strategies used to fight antimicrobial resistance and the relative impact seen on antimicrobial resistance.

We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, or meta-analyses.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
