Dear Colleagues,
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to represent one of the most pressing challenges in modern medicine, threatening decades of progress in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Each major therapeutic advancement has been inevitably followed, sooner or later, by the emergence of resistance mechanisms capable of limiting its clinical utility. This recurring pattern highlights an important reality: the development of new antimicrobial agents alone is unlikely to provide a lasting solution unless accompanied by a deeper understanding of pathogen evolution, resistance biology, and prudent antimicrobial use.
This Special Issue, Infectious Diseases & AMR: Past Lessons, Future Directions, aims to explore the lessons that decades of experience with infectious diseases and antimicrobial therapy can offer to current and future challenges. We welcome contributions addressing the epidemiology and molecular mechanisms of resistance, the evolution and dissemination of multidrug-resistant pathogens, and the clinical implications of emerging resistance determinants.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of both established and novel therapeutic strategies. While significant attention is directed toward recently introduced antibiotics and emerging antimicrobial strategies, valuable insights continue to arise from the appropriate use of established agents and combination regimens that remain relevant in the management of multidrug-resistant infections. Understanding how antimicrobial agents exert their activity, how resistance emerges and spreads, and how these processes influence clinical outcomes is essential for informed decision-making.
In addition, this Special Issue also welcomes work on antimicrobial stewardship, treatment duration, infection prevention and control, rapid diagnostics, and interventions that support the preservation of effective therapies. By bringing together these complementary perspectives, we aim to foster a more comprehensive understanding of how experience from the past can inform future responses to infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
