Dear Colleagues,
Microbial life thrives at the physical and chemical edges of habitability—from hyperthermal, low-pH terrestrial springs (e.g., boiling acid springs) to permanently frozen polar deserts and hydrothermally active deep-sea vents characterized by extreme pressure and anoxia. These extreme environments harbor a largely untapped wealth of novel microorganisms with unique metabolic architectures. Many of them produce extremophilic enzymes and possess novel degradation pathways that remain functional under extreme conditions.
This Special Issue focuses on the intersection of microbial taxonomy and bioremediation. We invite contributions that describe new extremophilic taxa isolated from any extreme habitat, with a clear emphasis on their potential to degrade or detoxify environmental pollutants, or promote plant growth. Studies combining rigorous polyphasic taxonomy with experimental evidence of pollutant transformation, enzyme characterization, or community-based remediation, or multiple-omics analyses are particularly welcome. By integrating systematics with application-oriented research, this Special Issue aims to accelerate the transition from describing extremophile diversity to deploying extremophiles as powerful tools for the remediation of extreme ecosystems.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
