Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) have revolutionized our ability to map endogenous metabolites, complex lipids, and exogenous environmental chemicals at an unprecedented scale and sensitivity. Consequently, the integration of metabolomics, lipidomics, and exposomics has emerged as a powerful framework for deep-phenotyping biological systems, deciphering host–environment interactions and uncovering the molecular mechanisms underlying human diseases and toxicological responses.
Despite rapid advances in analytical instrumentation, translating high-dimensional, complex LC-MS data into reliable biological insights remains a major bottleneck. The field faces ongoing bioinformatics challenges, including the automated processing of raw spectra, accurate tandem MS (MS2) peak annotation, complex multi-omics integration, and the sophisticated covariate adjustments required for human cohort studies. There is a pressing need for robust analytical workflows—ranging from feature extraction and pathway enrichment to dose-response modeling and causal inference—that narrow the gap between raw spectral data and systems-level functional interpretation.
This Special Issue, “Application of Metabolomics, Lipidomics and Exposomics Based on LC-MS,” aims to highlight the latest methodological developments and impactful biological applications in this multidisciplinary space. We invite contributions of both original research and comprehensive review articles.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to:
- Novel bioinformatics tools, web platforms, and statistical workflows for processing and interpreting LC-MS/MS targeted and untargeted data.
- Innovative applications of lipidomics and metabolomics in disease phenotyping, biomarker discovery, and precision medicine. Exposomics studies investigating environmental exposures, dose-response modeling, and metabolite–phenotype causal estimates.
- Integrative multi-omics approaches linking the metabolome and exposome with other omics layers (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics).
- The purpose of this Special Issue is to consolidate state-of-the-art computational advances and practical LC-MS applications, providing researchers with a comprehensive guide on effectively navigating from raw analytical data to actionable biological insights. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
