Dear Colleagues,
With escalating demands for resource recovery, environmental remediation, and high-purity product manufacturing, achieving precise selectivity has become the defining frontier of membrane science. Conventional polymeric membranes frequently encounter intrinsic mathematical trade-offs between permeability and selectivity. This limitation particularly suppresses their efficacy in process flows containing structurally analogous molecules or heavy metals presenting identical valences. Overcoming this bottleneck requires the fundamental upgrade of classical barrier matrices. This Special Issue, “Polymeric Membranes for Selective Separation: Design to Application”, is thereby framed to gather pioneering studies dedicated to the rational design, highly scalable fabrication, and real-world deployment of advanced polymeric membranes structured on engineered selectivity.
We profoundly invite original research articles, inclusive reviews, and communications charting the route from microscopic property engineering towards tangible commercial utilities. Suitable topics address the comprehensive transition linking material design to industrial evaluation, highlighting functional scenarios. The areas of central importance involve (but are plainly not limited to) the subsequent fields:
- Tailored-selectivity membranes explicitly designated for pharmacological components, rare earth elements, and persistent ecological contaminants;
- Hybrid matrices strategically integrating MOFs, COFs, nanocarbon components, and sophisticated channels to intensify substance discrimination;
- Nature-inspired configurations and next-generation biomass-derived selective domains;
- Superior multifunctional architectures demonstrating concurrent targeting affinity alongside rigorous antifouling, inherent antimicrobial, or stimuli-responsive profiles;
- Macro-scale technical validation processes, consecutive long-term degradation tests, combined with critical techno-economic evaluations.
