Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As global challenges of resource scarcity and environmental pollution intensify, membrane-based separation technologies have emerged as indispensable solutions for water purification, wastewater remediation, gas separation, resource recovery and sustainable industrial production. Advanced functional, nanostructured and hybrid membrane materials have greatly improved separation performance and selectivity, yet major bottlenecks still exist. Membrane fouling, performance degradation, insufficient selectivity, high energy consumption and unclear transport mechanisms hinder long-term stable operation and large-scale industrial application. Innovations in membrane materials and integrated membrane processes are continuously expanding the application scope of membrane technologies across environmental and industrial sectors.

This Special Issue aims to showcase recent advances in functional membrane science and sustainable separation technologies for water treatment, desalination, gas separation, solvent recovery and resource recovery, bridging fundamental research and practical engineering deployment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: (i) design, fabrication, and characterization of advanced functional membrane materials; (ii) membrane transport and separation mechanisms; (iii) membrane fouling behavior, monitoring, mitigation, and cleaning strategies; (iv) emerging membrane processes and hybrid systems for efficient separation. We welcome Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Mini Reviews, Perspectives, and Case Studies that provide fundamental insights, technological innovations, or practical applications related to membrane materials and membrane-based separation processes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
