Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Respiratory failure is common cause of in-hospital morbidity and mortality. Causes of respiratory failure are various, including pneumonia, aggravation of chronic lung disease, heart failure, and the progression of neurodegenerative disease. In cases of chronic respiratory failure, some patients need a home ventilator.

The treatment of underlying causes such as infection control is a key element of management, and oxygen therapy for respiratory failure is another important axis. At this time in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, the management of respiratory failure is faced with new challenges in terms of public health: shortage of medical resources, need for intact medical services, and the absence of drug therapy.

High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), noninvasive ventilation (NIV), mechanical ventilation, and VV ECMO are useful tools for patients with respiratory failure. The proper choice of oxygen supply is important to the prognosis of patients under different circumstances.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to discuss matters associated with respiratory failure and its management, with a wide range of topics and perspectives related to the oxygen therapy. This includes not only invasive mechanical ventilation but also HFNC, NIV, and VV ECMO for acute or chronic respiratory failure.
