Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sports neurology is a relatively new subspeciality within the field of neurology. It specifically addresses the neurologic aspects of sports and sports-related injuries. Concussion and traumatic sports encephalopathy might be the first topics that come to mind but the field of sports-related neurologic injuries includes spinal cord injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, nerve entrapment syndromes and dystonia.

However, the topics in this Special Issue should not be limited to the management and prevention of injuries and overload syndromes of the central or peripheral nervous system. There are many people suffering from neurological conditions such as seizures, stroke, Parkinson´s disease, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy, who want to get involved with sports. In addition to this, there are athletes with neurological conditons competing at a high level within their sport. We also welcome articles reporting on sports activity in myopathies, neuropathies and cerebral palsy. Many children have been excluded from sports activities in school in the past as a result. Another important topic is the effect of extreme sports and weight cutting on the brain.

The scope of this Special Issue ranges from sideline protocols for injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and graduated return-to-play progression to care for athletes with special needs requiring specific knowledge of neurological conditions and transfer of research results to clinical practice.
