Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Craniomaxillofacial surgery has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, especially in the post-COVID era, driven by the rapid adoption of digital and personalized technologies. Originating from the broader concept of Industry 4.0, the term “Surgery 4.0” reflects the integration of technologies such as additive manufacturing, augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and multi-omics data into surgical workflows. In craniomaxillofacial surgery, these innovations have begun to reshape the way complex reconstructions, oncologic rehabilitations, and deformity corrections are approached, enabling more precise, efficient, and individualized treatments.

This Special Issue aims to explore and disseminate the most recent and impactful advancements in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery 4.0. It will focus on how digital planning, point-of-care manufacturing, advanced visualization technologies, and molecular data integration are revolutionizing the field. It will collate contributions from clinicians, biomedical engineers, data scientists, and other stakeholders who are pioneering the use of these tools to improve surgical outcomes. The scope covers both clinical and translational research, including technological development, case series, workflow innovation, and patient-centered approaches.

We are particularly interested in contributions that address the following topics:

  • Point-of-care manufacturing of patient-specific implants and surgical guides;
  • Integration of 3D printing into preoperative planning and intraoperative navigation;
  • Applications of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality in reconstructive and orthognathic surgery;
  • Implant-guided rehabilitation strategies in oncologic maxillofacial patients;
  • Smart surgical instruments (SSIs) and real-time intraoperative feedback systems;
  • Omics-based approaches for surgical planning and tumor stratification;
  • AI-based surgical planning, decision support systems, and data analytics.

We welcome a wide range of manuscript types including but not limited to the following:

  • Original research articles;
  • Clinical case series with technological integration;
  • Reviews and meta-analyses;
  • Translational research bridging technology and clinical practice;
  • Perspective and opinion pieces from experts in the field.

The goal is to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary overview of how Craniomaxillofacial Surgery 4.0 is shaping the future of patient care.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
