Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Background & history
Periodontitis is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases, and has serious consequences if not adequately diagnosed and treated. The most profound consequence of periodontitis is the impairment of the tooth support apparatus and, consequently, tooth loss.
Dental implants can be considered a viable option for the treatment of partial/full edentulism, whose clinical results were confirmed by a number of high-quality scientific papers, including systematic literature reviews.
Recent studies have pointed out the need to understand and manage potential peri-implant complications of infective origins, in particular in patients with periodontal disease. Moreover, the recently published guidelines for periodontal treatment highlighted the need for more research in some fields, with particular regard to surgical and nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis. In general, the treatment of Stage IV periodontitis represents a clinical challenge and there is a lack, in the scientific literature, of studies evaluating treatment alternatives and their long-term results.
Aim and scope
The aim of the present Special Issue would be to explore the connection between periodontitis and implant treatment, thus exploring techniques for avoiding tooth loss in periodontal patients and strategies for implant treatment in patients bearing this risk factor.
Systematic reviews, clinical studies, and narrative reviews on these topics are requested and will be considered, with particular focus on papers about implant treatments in patients with periodontitis or about the surgical treatment of periodontal diseases.
