Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Mental disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide and are increasingly recognized as major contributors to the global burden of disease. They often coexist with chronic somatic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pain syndromes, forming complex biopsychosocial interactions that challenge current models of care. This Special Issue of Medicina, titled ‘Mental Illness and Mental Health: Challenges, Trends and Perspectives’, aims to address these multifaceted relationships through an interdisciplinary lens, integrating psychiatry, psychology, neuroscience, internal medicine, and public health.

We particularly welcome research on mechanisms linking mental and physical health, early detection and prevention strategies, and biomarkers and digital phenotyping, as well as innovative therapeutic approaches such as precision psychiatry, integrative care models, and e-health interventions. Contributions exploring the effects of social determinants, lifestyle factors, and global crises, (including pandemics and climate change) on mental well-being are also encouraged.

By fostering dialogue across disciplines, this Special Issue seeks to advance translational understanding, promote holistic patient-centered care, and inform public health strategies aimed at improving both mental and physical health outcomes worldwide.
