Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the last decade, there has been tremendous interest towards metal surface modification because of the enhancement of tensile strength, resistance to wear and corrosion, and potentially lucrative properties such as biocompatibility for diverse industrial applications. The increasing need to change the surface properties of the entire component or some areas to meet design and functional requirements is driving the development of surface engineering. This is widely recognized as an area of great importance to materials and mechanical engineers. Advancements in the addition of reinforcement to manufacture new nanostructured metal matrix composites provide great possibilities of breakthrough overcoming traditional challenges.

Owing to this need, this Special Issue deals with friction- and machining-based breakthrough technologies that have promising applications and huge cost benefits.

Friction-based processing methods

Friction-based solid state processing methods are exemplary candidates for processing heat sensitive materials due to their ability to transfer material from the consumable stick to the substrate. The friction stir processing concept has opened up a new field for joining metals, especially light metals, also with tremendous applications safeguarding environmental concerns. Topics of interest include:

  • Friction stir processing;
  • Friction surfacing;
  • Friction transformation processing;
  • Friction extrusion processing;
  • Friction stir welding;
  • Friction hydro pillar processing;
  • Friction seam surfacing.

Machining techniques

Machining is another method that can be used to modify the surface of a metal object. This process involves using tools to remove material from the object to create a desired shape or finish. Machining is often used in conjunction with other processes, such as heat treatment, to achieve the desired results.

Machining processes hold much promise in terms of altering the surface of metals and alloys. Topics of interest include:

  • Ion beam milling;
  • Complementary machining;
  • Surface texturing;
  • Sand blasting;
  • Laser surface modification;
  • Shot peening;
  • Quenching;
  • Electrical discharge machining;
  • Surface deposition manufacturing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2300 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
