Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Environmental monitoring is critical for tackling global challenges such as climate change, air and water pollution, and ecosystem degradation. Recent advances in electronic and photonic sensor technologies have significantly improved the detection, quantification, and real-time monitoring of environmental parameters. Nanomaterials, two-dimensional systems, metal–organic frameworks, conductive polymers, hybrid composites, biodegradable substrates, and other novel functional materials are enabling the development of new sensing mechanisms and device architectures for next-generation electronic and photonic sensors with improved performance and reduced power consumption. Integration with smart platforms, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing, and artificial intelligence, enables the creation of autonomous environmental sensing systems that can support predictive models, adaptive responses, and real-world deployment at scale. This Special Issue aims to present recent progress and emerging trends in fundamental materials research, novel sensing mechanisms, and system integration for electronic and photonic sensors targeting environmental monitoring and sustainability applications. We invite the submission of high-quality original research (both experimental and theoretical), comprehensive reviews, and prospects of the field and its future directions.

  • Novel functional materials for electronic and photonic sensors (nanomaterials, 2D materials, MOFs, polymers, bio-inspired materials);
  • Photonic materials and devices for optical and spectroscopic-based environmental sensing;
  • Flexible, wearable, and low-power sensor materials and architectures for real-time monitoring;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
