Dear Colleagues,
Marine sources do have a long-standing tradition in cosmetic and wellbeing applications with a strong connection to therapeutic effects of seawater, algae, marine sewage and mudflat, as developed in the thalasso approach. Marine ingredients, especially algae, are multi sellers and play a role in the marketing of cosmetics, as they are generally perceived as beneficial.
Many of the compounds responsible for the effects used in anti-aging, skin regeneration and dermal moisture completion have a pharmaceutical potential for skin and soft tissue infection treatment and prophylaxis. Skin and soft tissue infections are a common reason for patients seeking inpatient and outpatient medical care and are accompanying many other diseases. As for other infectious diseases, the occurrence of multiresistant strains and the risk of generalization of a local infection carries severe risks for patients and partly causes source control via surgical debridement.
Using marine compounds for prevention and treatment of such infections in cosmetics, cosmeceuticals and drugs, interesting economic potential can be realized as a path for companies via cosmetics to pharmaceuticals. In order to realize such potential, sustainable use of marine resources is of high importance.
The focus of this Special Issue will be to highlight the potential of marine natural products as anti-infective agents for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infection and their prophylaxis. The biological variety of the sources and the chemical diversity of the compounds are of interest. Manuscripts describing innovative methodological approaches for the identification of such compounds, as well as sustainable production, are highly welcome, as they might help to overcome the supply issues.
Special attention may also be paid to the effects of marine compounds on stabilization or regeneration of normal skin functionality and benefits for the natural skin flora as an important factor in the prevention of infections.
I invite academic and industry scientists to submit original and conceptual research articles and reviews highlighting the biological activities of known or novel marine compounds with a specific focus on skin applications.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
