Dear Colleagues,
Marine environments—sediments, deep-sea habitats, symbioses, and extreme niches—harbor diverse Streptomyces lineages enriched in biosynthetic capacity and adaptive chemistry. Natural products from marine Streptomyces continue to expand the accessible chemical space for anti-infective, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antiparasitic, and neuroactive discovery, while also providing mechanistic probes that illuminate fundamental biology. Yet, the field faces persistent challenges, including metabolite rediscovery, cryptic expression of biosynthetic pathways, supply constraints, and incomplete biosynthesis–structure–activity relationships.
This Special Issue, Natural Products from Marine Streptomyces, aims to showcase decisive progress from discovery to mechanism, integrating modern workflows that couple cultivation innovation with multi-omics and functional validation. We welcome original research articles and critical reviews addressing (but not limited to) the following:
- Discovery and structure determination: Advanced isolation strategies; dereplication; MS/MS molecular networking; metabolomics-guided workflows; structure elucidation (NMR/MS/advanced spectroscopic methods).
- Biosynthetic pathway: Biosynthetic gene cluster annotation and linkage; gene knockouts; heterologous expression; enzyme characterization; pathway engineering.
- Activation of silent chemistry: OSMAC; co-culture; chemical/epigenetic elicitation; stress and ecological cue-informed cultivation; innovative fermentation designs.
- Chemical ecology and taxonomy: Habitat-driven diversity; symbiotic/host-associated Streptomyces; biogeography; robust strain characterization.
- Bioactivity and molecular mechanism: Target identification; mode-of-action studies; resistance biology; pharmacology-relevant profiling; early translational assessment.
Submissions should emphasize chemical novelty and/or biological insight, supported by stringent analytical validation, clear provenance of strains/samples, and reproducible experimental design. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives, this Special Issue aims to provide a timely reference point for the community and to catalyze the next generation of discoveries from marine Streptomyces.
