Advanced Manufacturing Technologies for Improving Fatigue Behavior of Metal Components
This special issue belongs to the section “Advanced Manufacturing“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Material fatigue in metal components leads to significant global economic losses, estimated at billions of euros per year. In addition, accidents and catastrophes due to material fatigue are a direct threat to people's lives. Therefore, the development of advanced technologies to improve the fatigue behavior of metal components is an investment in the safety of their operation, as the goal is to protect society's most important capital—the human factor. Improved fatigue behavior results from modifying the material structure at all levels in an appropriate manner, either in the entire volume of the metal component or only in its surface layers. This Special Issue focuses on advanced technologies for increasing the fatigue strength of metal components used in all areas of industry.
Potential topics include the following:
- Advanced technologies for modifying the structure throughout the volume of the metal component based on thermal impact (heat or cryogenic), mechanical impact (cold rolling, cold hole expansion, etc.), and hybrid and combined methods.
- Advanced surface engineering technologies based on the following:
- Surface cold working;
- Surface heat treatment and thermo-chemical diffusion;
- Concentrated energy flows;
- Hybrid and combined approaches.
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of developed advanced technologies (experimental, theoretical, numerical simulations, and combined approaches)

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
