Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Electric power systems and microgrids are undergoing rapid transformation driven by the increasing usage of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, and energy storage technologies, alongside significant advances in power electronics. At the same time, growing requirements related to efficiency, reliability, power quality, and sustainability are reshaping the design and operation of modern power systems. Recent progress in electrical machines, power electronic converters, advanced control strategies, protection schemes, and intelligent monitoring has enabled more flexible, resilient, and efficient system architectures.

Microgrids and energy hubs, operating in both grid-connected and islanded modes, have emerged as key enablers of decentralized generation, advanced energy management, and enhanced system resilience. Their development plays a crucial role in supporting smart grids, integrating distributed energy resources, and improving overall system performance across industrial, commercial, and residential applications.

This Special Issue aims to provide a dedicated forum for publishing high-quality original research and comprehensive review articles addressing recent advances in electric power systems and microgrids. The topic is well aligned with the scope of Machines, emphasizing machine-based energy systems, power conversion technologies, system modeling, control, optimization, and integration. The objective is to assemble a focused collection of contributions that bridge theoretical developments and practical engineering applications.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and review papers are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: microgrid planning, operation, and optimization; renewable energy integration; power electronic converters and motor drives; electrical machines in power system applications; control, protection, and stability of microgrids; smart grids and intelligent energy management systems; energy storage technologies; power quality enhancement; and advanced monitoring, diagnostics, and fault detection techniques.

We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
