Remote Sensing and Big Data in Land Use Monitoring and Planning

This special issue belongs to the section “Land – Observation and Monitoring“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Remote sensing and big data technologies have revolutionized our ability to monitor and understand land-use dynamics at unprecedented spatial and temporal scales. The integration of high-resolution satellite imagery, machine learning algorithms, and cloud computing platforms has enabled researchers and planners to detect land-use changes in near real-time, analyze complex patterns, and predict future trends. As urbanization accelerates and environmental pressures intensify globally, these technologies have become indispensable tools for sustainable land management, urban planning, and policy-making. However, challenges remain in effectively leveraging big data analytics, improving classification accuracy, and translating remote sensing insights into actionable planning strategies.

The goal of this Special Issue is to collect papers (original research articles and review papers) to give insights about innovative applications of remote sensing and big data in land-use monitoring and planning, bridging the gap between technological advances and practical implementation.

This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:

  • Novel remote sensing techniques and big data analytics for land-use classification and change detection.
  • Integration of multi-source data (satellite imagery, social media, and IoT sensors) for comprehensive land-use monitoring.
  • Machine learning and deep learning applications in automated land-use mapping.
  • Real-time monitoring systems for urban expansion, agricultural land conversion, and deforestation.
  • Data-driven approaches for land-use planning, zoning, and policy evaluation.
  • Spatiotemporal analysis of land-use patterns and their environmental and socioeconomic impacts.
  • Cloud-based platforms and open-source tools for processing large-scale remote sensing data.

We look forward to receiving your original research articles and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Land is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
