Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Time-sensitive networks (TSNs) are a kind of deterministic service network based on Ethernet technology, which strictly requires time synchronization, high stability and high-quality resource reservation, and convenient and effective network traffic control technology. Time-sensitive networks can be used widely in smart vehicles, aircraft electronics, and aerospace and are also the key basis for the future industrial Internet. Vehicle, airborne, aerospace, and industrial Internet realize the interconnection of people, machines, and things; the amount of data transmitted is huge, and the intelligence requirements are critical, requiring a good combination of the data plane, communication plane, and control plane. TSNs are also the key technology of the industrial Internet, which can provide a deterministic guarantee of limited data transmission time for industry controls.

The TSN core protocol has been standardized, but due to technical limitations, it is still not widely applied. In the past few years, TSN-based products and experimental platforms have begun to emerge, but there is still a lack of more specific and successful typical application cases. The main unsolved immature techniques that limit the application are wireless TSN network technology, wired and wireless hybrid TSN network technology, TSN dynamic management configuration, unified service scheduling, resource reservation, etc.

This Special Issue presents and highlights advances in the protocols, algorithm simulation, and typical applications for TSN. The topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

  • Wireless TSN technology;
  • Wired TSN and wireless TSN hybrid technology;
  • Deterministic and reliability analysis of TSN;
  • TSN time synchronization technology;
  • TSN architecture technology;
  • Dynamic analysis of TSN services and traffic;
  • TSN traffic scheduling technology;
  • TSN configuration management technology;
  • Unified technology for TSN products from different manufacturers;
  • Typical applications of TSN;
  • TSN simulation technology and test bed.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Sensor and Actuator Networks is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

At present, many network applications are seeking to implement Time-Sensitive Network (TSN) technology, which not only furnishes communication transmission services that are deterministic, low-latency, highly dependable, and have ample bandwidth, but also enables unified configuration management, permitting different network types to function under a single management system. These characteristics enable it to be widely used in many fields such as industrial sensor and actuator networks, in-vehicle networks, data center networks, and edge computing. Nonetheless, TSN’s configuration management faces numerous difficulties and challenges related to network deployment, automated operation, and maintenance, as well as real-time and safety assurance, rendering it exceedingly intricate. In recent years, some studies have been conducted on TSN configuration management, encompassing various aspects such as system design, key technologies for configuration management, protocol enhancement, and application development. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of systematic summaries of these studies. Hence, this article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of TSN configuration management. Drawing upon more than 70 relevant publications and the pertinent standards established by the IEEE 802.1 TSN working group, we first introduce the system architecture of TSN configuration management from a macro perspective and then explore specific technical details. Additionally, we demonstrate its application scenarios through practical cases and finally highlight the challenges and future research directions. We aspire to provide a comprehensive reference for peers and new researchers interested in TSN configuration management. Full article
