Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on the broad topic of “Role of Financial Market Development towards Mitigation and Adaptation” given that fact the smooth transition towards a more sustainable economic and social system requires the development of sound and sustainable financial systems. Mitigation actions are meant to reduce climate change by decreasing the flow of heat-trapping greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. Two main mechanism to mitigate GHGs are the following: i) plummeting sources of GHGs; and ii) enhancing the sink or sequestration that accumulate and store these gases. Development of renewable energy (RE) appears to be central in addressing the negative externality of economic growth and environmental vulnerability and ensuring energy security. Nevertheless, the growth of RE is insignificant as it involves massive penetration of RE technologies, which requires a lumpy investment. In the context of mitigation finance, the nature and scope of mitigation actions need to be carefully considered, as financing requirements and modes of financing depend on the purpose of the actions. This Special Issue (SI) stresses climate financing needs in realizing the goals of a different sector under Paris and national voluntary agreements in developing and developed countries perspectives. Precisely, the SI is seeking novel articles focusing on the role of the financial sector and its needs in carrying out mitigation and adaptation projects and programs.
