Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, titled “The Silent Crisis: Air Pollution and Its Hidden Impact on Human Health”, aims to shed light on the health hazards of air pollutants, including physical, chemical, and biological agents.

This Special Issue attempts to consolidate the latest advancements and diverse perspectives within the field of air pollution. It aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between air pollutants and human impacts, providing a platform for sharing innovative research, methodologies, and insightful analyses.

The suggested themes include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Health hazards evaluations: Demonstrating health impacts for humans exposed to air pollutants.
  2. Emerging pollutants: Exploring the impacts of new air contaminants on humans.
  3. Multiple-source effects: Assessing pollutant effects across different sources, including industry, transportation, residential, and the power generation of air pollution.
  4. Air pollution control: Air pollution control measures can be categorized into source control, emission control, and regulatory control.
  5. Methodological innovations: Showcasing novel approaches for assessing air pollution risks, including advances in exposure and risk assessment such as causal inference, machine learning, remote sensing, low-cost sensor networks, personal monitoring, exposome-informed approaches, and integrative modeling.
  6. Identifying susceptible populations, quantifying inequities, and evaluating the effectiveness of control policies to inform actionable public health and regulatory decisions.
  7. Policy evaluation: Evaluating control measures to inform public health decisions and regulatory actions.

The following types of articles for contributions are encouraged.

  • Original research articles: Presenting new findings, data, and analyses of air pollution.
  • Review articles: Comprehensive assessments of specific aspects or trends in air pollutants.
  • Methodological papers: Describing innovative methodologies and approaches in assessing air contaminant impacts.
  • Case studies: Real-world applications and observations of air pollution.

Atmospheric wet deposition represents a major pathway for the transfer of organic micropollutants into terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the occurrence and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalate esters (PAEs), and BTEX compounds in rainwater across Northern Serbia (Vojvodina region). Rainwater samples were collected during the 2025–2026 heating season at three locations: a petrochemical site in Kikinda, a traffic- and residentially influenced site in Sremska Mitrovica, and an urban background site in Sombor. Total concentrations showed pronounced spatial variability, with the highest ΣBTEX and ΣPAE levels recorded in Kikinda (∑BTEX = 2.818 μg L∑1; ∑PAE = 0.930 μg L∑1). Diagnostic ratios identified a dominant petrogenic signature in Kikinda (LMW/HMW > 1), while pyrogenic sources prevailed in Sremska Mitrovica and Sombor ((Fla/Fla + Pyr) > 0.5). BTEX profiles across all sites were characterised by the absence of benzene and elevated toluene and xylene levels (B/T ≈ 0; T/X > 1). Health risk assessment indicated an acceptable but non-negligible carcinogenic risk from PAHs, particularly for children in industrial areas. These findings highlight the role of precipitation as an efficient scavenger of organic pollutants and emphasise the need for integrated atmospheric–hydrological monitoring frameworks in industrialised regions.
