Dear Colleagues,
Woody fungi are an important part of forest ecosystems, contributing mainly to the decomposition of woody matter. They are traditionally divided into three types of decomposition: white rot, brown rot and soft rot, based on their species-specific ability to decompose lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Although interspecific differences in lignin preference for decomposition fall along a continuum rather than into clear categories, decomposing wood can often be classified into one of several separate decomposition types. In white rot, lignin decomposes selectively or simultaneously with cellulose and hemicellulose. In brown rot, cellulose and hemicellulose decompose, but lignin remains relatively unchanged. Wood-destroying fungi can also be used as biological tools to recover woody biomass in the energy or paper industries. On the other hand, they cause extensive damage to both forest crops and wooden buildings or structures. Research on the physiology of wood-destroying fungi is therefore important both in terms of basic research and various practical applications.
For this Special Issue, manuscripts dealing with any aspect of fungal physiology (e.g., fungal cell, nutrition, metabolism, growth, reproduction and death) are welcome.
