Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

There is a variety of offshore structures, of renewable energy devices and aquaculture installations that require mooring systems to be kept in position. The mooring system is a critical component of a floating production platform, and its integrity over the field life is of great importance. The present trend that oil and gas fields move toward deeper water imposes stringent requirements on the mooring systems that become very long, raising challenges about their weight, dynamic behavior, and even material properties. The experimental validation of such a long mooring system also raises difficulties. In addition to the station keeping performance, the cost of the moorings is another important issue during the mooring system design of WECs. The cost of moorings is approximated to 10% of total WEC structural cost and can be as large as 30%. Previous analysis on moorings also concluded that particular attention should be paid to mooring system design, in terms of properties and materials selection, to increase efficiency and at the same time reduce extreme mooring loads and fatigue. A floating aquaculture with a mooring system which could meet the global demand increase of cultivation capacity for fish production is also in development. Designing floating net cages and mooring systems is of great concern to the marine aquaculture industry due to the potential structural failures in storm waves and current during storm events.

The present Special Issue of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering will be dedicated to innovative mooring concepts, computational methods, high-fidelity numerical models, and experimental analysis as a support of the development of mooring systems. Thus, we encourage the submission of high-quality papers in the following areas:

Innovative mooring design and analysis;

Numerical simulations for mooring dynamics;

Computational fluid mechanics for mooring systems;

Model tests of moorings with floating bodies;

Mechanical properties of mooring ropes;

Mooring reliability analysis;

Short-term and long-term extreme response of mooring systems;

Dynamics of moored floating structures;

Mooring design and dynamics of offshore aquaculture systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
