Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Maritime ports serve as critical nodes in global energy logistics, facilitating the transportation, storage, and distribution of fossil fuels, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and renewable energy resources. Their strategic importance has expanded with the integration of offshore renewable energy systems, including wind farms and energy islands, which reinforce their role in global energy supply chains. Ports serve as critical nodes in the production, storage, provision, and distribution of both conventional fossil fuels and zero or near-zero (ZnZ) carbon fuels. In addition to supporting the shipping industry in achieving zero emissions, ports must develop sustainable infrastructures, such as bunkering terminals for alternative fuels and maritime Onshore Power Systems (OPSs), to serve both domestic and international maritime transport.

Given this significance, the reliability of maritime ports' energy infrastructure is central to maintaining global energy stability.

This Special Issue, titled "Maritime Ports Energy Infrastructure", will bring together cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, global innovative case studies, and review studies that address the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in developing sustainable and resilient energy systems for ports.

We invite contributions from researchers and academics that share their insights and advancements in this rapidly evolving field.

The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

Theme 1: Renewable Energy Integration and Management in Ports

  • Maritime Onshore power supply (cold ironing): technological advancements, operational challenges, and economic feasibility;
  • Integration of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, tidal) into port power grids;
  • Utilising smart grids to support sustainable shipping;
  • Energy storage solutions (e.g., batteries, hydrogen) for port applications;
  • Development of port-centric energy microgrids and smart grids;
  • Energy efficiency measures for port buildings, equipment, and operations.

Theme 2: Alternative Fuels and Bunkering Infrastructure

  • Development of infrastructure for utilising ZnZ technologies and alternative fuel to support sustainable shipping;
  • Safety and regulatory frameworks for handling, storing, and utilising ZnZ fuels.

Theme 3: Digitalisation and Smart Port Energy Management:

  • The application of IoT, AI, and blockchain for optimising energy consumption in ports;
  • Digital twins for port energy system planning and management;
  • Cybersecurity of port energy infrastructure;
  • Data analytics for forecasting energy demand and optimising vessel turnaround times.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
