Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Analogical reasoning and relational thinking are the cognitive foundations of intelligence. They enable humans to detect patterns and rules, generalize specific experiences, apply knowledge to new situations, and form abstractions. These cognitive processes are also necessary for creative thinking, learning the relational structure of language, and social intelligence, such as trust, reciprocity, and forming alliances. Given these insights, analogical reasoning tasks, such as Raven's Progressive Matrices, are important components of intelligence tests. Furthermore, an understanding of analogical reasoning can overcome the limitations that arise from an overemphasis on binary logic and allow us to discuss human rationality. Although binary logic is assumed to be the norm for human deductive thinking, it cannot be applied to human analogical reasoning. Instead, researchers of analogical reasoning and relational thinking have focused on principles that index good analogies, such as structural and systematic correspondence between the base and target domains. Thus, researchers of human reasoning can address not only human logical rationalities, but also human cognitive rationalities.

The Special Issue aims to clarify the importance of analogical reasoning and relational thinking as fundamental processes in the cognitive foundations of intelligence and rationality. Furthermore, should at least eight articles be successfully collected, these may subsequently be published in book form. Original research articles based on psychological experiments or surveys, as well as reviews, including of theoretical studies, are welcome in this Special Issue.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Intelligence is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
