Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The topic of plant stem cells or stem cell-like cells becomes crucial for the further development and exploitation of in vitro plant cell, tissue, and organ cultures. Stem cells bring new insights into the processes of dedifferentiation, division, and proliferation of cells, as well as plant regeneration, after their exposition to exogenous growth hormones and regulators during cultivation in vitro. Stem cells are innately located in primary (apical, intercalary, floral) and secondary (lateral) meristems and can be isolated and cultivated in vitro. They have specific and distinct properties when compared to dedifferentiated cells created by a hormonal environment from differentiated cells in various in vitro culture systems. Moreover, differentiated cells can also be transformed into a less differentiated state or stem-like cells, and another extraordinary property of plant cells is the ability to generate stem cells de novo. Some of their characteristics, especially the composition of vacuoles, allow their morphological identification. Many other properties (cell aggregation, growth rate, homogeneity in cell type, tolerance to shear stress, high responsibility to elicitors, and others) give them a fundamental advantage in the production of cell biomass, cell extracts and metabolites, and natural products based on plant cells in small and large-scale in vitro cultures.

In this Special Issue, we would like to present progress in topics related to plant stem cells or stem cell-like cells, beginning with the genetic and cellular background related to stem cells and continuing to the establishment of stem cell cultures in vitro. Contributions to the knowledge of stem cells from different types of existing meristems (primary and secondary), the transformation of differentiated cells into stem cell-like cells, and the processes of de novo formation of stem cells, as well as their practical and commercial applications, are welcome.
