Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metabolomics is a powerful and rapidly expanding approach in biomedical research and personalized medicine, aimed at the comprehensive analysis of small-molecule metabolites within biological systems. Based on the research objective, different analytical strategies can be employed. Untargeted metabolomics offers a broad, unbiased metabolic profile, ideal for hypothesis generation, biomarker discovery, and global metabolic fingerprinting. Targeted metabolomics enables precise quantification of predefined metabolites, supporting clinical validation, pharmacokinetic studies, and diagnostics. Moreover, metabolomics plays a crucial role in the functional characterization of biological systems and cellular models, offering dynamic insights into cellular metabolism under physiological or pathological conditions, drug exposure, or genetic manipulation. The high complexity and dimensionality of metabolomic data require advanced bioinformatics tools for data preprocessing, statistical analysis, metabolic pathway mapping, and integration with other omics platforms. Bioinformatics is essential to ensure data reliability, extract biologically meaningful information, and drive the translation of metabolomic findings into clinical and therapeutic contexts.

In this Special Issue, we aim to highlight metabolomics studies that leverage innovative analytical approaches applied to complex biological systems. The objective is to characterize previously unexplored or poorly understood biological profiles, or to apply metabolomics in the context of disease diagnostics, prognostics, or treatment monitoring. Of particular interest are studies that integrate advanced bioinformatics tools for the management, analysis, and biological interpretation of experimental data, contributing to a deeper functional understanding of metabolic signatures in health and disease.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
