Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The World Alzheimer Report 2018 states that 50 million people worldwide are living with dementia, and this number will more than triple to 152 million by 2050. The total estimated worldwide cost of dementia in 2018 was one trillion US dollars and is expected to rise to two trillion US dollars by 2030. Although the understanding of the neurobiology and pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common form of dementia, has recently been greatly increased, only a few symptomatic treatments are currently available, and no curative treatment has been developed. Thus, parallel to the effort towards the development of drugs for the treatment of AD, efforts to develop preventive therapeutic strategies, such as nutritional therapies and caloric restriction, have been extensively investigated and implemented.
Recent studies discovered a possible common pathogenic background for AD and atherosclerosis. This include, for example, apolipoprotein‐E (ApoE). ApoE is protective against atherosclerosis and lipid plaque formation in the aorta by accepting remnant lipoproteins and promoting their uptake into the liver for clearance. Evidence also indicates that people with the apoE4 allele are susceptible to late-onset AD.
This Special Issue will focus on advances in the field of AD and atherosclerosis. Studies that could shed light on the pathogenesis, development of drugs, diagnosis, and prognosis of AD and atherosclerosis are welcome.

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
