Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
More than half of the world's population now lives in urban areas, a proportion projected to reach nearly 70% by 2050. How cities are planned, designed, and governed has far-reaching consequences for population health—from non-communicable diseases and mental well-being to heat-related mortality and health inequities. Growing international attention to healthy urban development has generated a substantial evidence base, yet significant knowledge gaps persist, particularly regarding causal pathways, intervention effectiveness, and the experiences of cities in the Global South.
This Special Issue invites original research articles, reviews, and policy analyses that advance our understanding of how urban environments shape active mobility, health behaviors, and health outcomes. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: walkability, bikeability, and street design; green and blue infrastructure and health; air quality, noise, and urban heat islands; housing and neighborhood determinants of NCDs and mental health; health equity and environmental justice; healthy cities policies and evaluation; climate adaptation and health co-benefits; smart city technologies for health monitoring; health impact assessment and economic evaluation; and food environments. Contributions from diverse geographic and disciplinary contexts are strongly encouraged.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.
