Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Ambient air pollution, including air toxics, impacts air quality and is a major public health issue worldwide. There is a burgeoning interest in neurotoxicants and air quality criteria pollutants and their effect on the risk of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental health outcomes. Children, older adults, pregnant women, and certain subgroups are disproportionately affected, including those with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and asthma, and workers or individuals residing near pollution sources. The Special Issue will focus on air pollution as a modifiable risk factor for morbidity and mortality and will present the most recent findings of both long- and short-term health effects of air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) and air toxics. This includes risk of cardiopulmonary outcomes; chronic and neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), dementia and Alzheimer’s disease; as well as neurodevelopmental conditions from long-term exposure to air pollution and air toxics. We also welcome papers investigating the impact of acute air pollution exposure on cardiopulmonary outcomes and ALS exacerbations in adults, asthma exacerbations in children, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Additionally, this Special Issue is interested in methodological papers addressing exposure assessment for air pollution and its components and air toxics, and meta-analyses of the public health impact of air pollution on the global community. Papers addressing social determinants in the study of health effects of air pollution are also of great interest.
