Dear Colleagues,
The World Health Organization considers overweight (OW) and obesity (OB) in children as one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century due to its rapid growth.
In this sense, the previous literature has not only noted a link between several clinical comorbidities, such as diabetes or metabolic syndrome, in children who have OW or OB, but also an association between OB and a higher risk of injury with respect to gait, plantar pressures and stability. These are the main causes of pain in the feet and lower limbs in children. However, there is still controversy regarding the level of association between OW and OB and gait disturbance in children because, while some studies reported that children with OW and OB have weaker stability, a flatter foot pattern and a larger axis of the foot than normal-weight children, which seems to impact plantar pressures, provoke pain, and affect their quality of life, other studies described no relationship between the OW and OB with foot pronation.
Due to the low number of articles on the subject, and as OB and the type of footprint are of great relevance at the clinical and health level, this study’s main objective is to note the differences in the analyzed variables according to body weight.
