Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Atmospheric aerosol particles, also known as particulate matter (PM), are estimated to lead to 3.3 million premature deaths per year worldwide. Atmospheric aerosol has been shown to be associated with a wide range of diseases, including asthma, lung cancer, and ischemic heart disease. However, the underlying toxicological mechanisms of atmospheric aerosol on human health are still largely unknown, largely due to the complexity of both atmospheric aerosol and the human health system. Atmospheric aerosol is a complex mixture with hundreds of compounds from a number of sources. The toxicity of different components in atmospheric aerosol is likely to vary depending on the physicochemical properties. The variety of animal or cellular health responses poses another challenge in identifying the toxicological effects of atmospheric aerosol. Without a comprehensive knowledge of the health effects of atmospheric aerosol, it is difficult to develop effective air quality policies to minimize the impacts of air pollution on human health.

The aim of this Special Issue is to communicate the most recent advances in the health effects of atmospheric aerosol. Potential topics for research and review articles include, but are not limited to, toxicological and epidemiological studies on the impact of atmospheric aerosol on human health; the development and application of novel methods to quantify the toxicity of atmospheric aerosol; inter-comparison studies between different cellular or chemical assays; the health effects of both indoor and outdoor air pollution; the toxicity of the source-oriented atmospheric aerosol; coupling atmospheric chemistry models and health risk assessments.
