Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Poor mental health causes enormous burdens worldwide, both economically and personally. During adolescence, there is an increase in mental health problems, which can have severe impacts on adult life. According to some reviews, adolescent mental health problems showed an increase in prevalence in recent decades.

Several different explanations for the deteriorating mental health of young people have been suggested: unemployment and financial strains, increased school stress and changes in the school systems, to name a few. In recent years, the rapidly increasing use of electronic media has been cited as a common cause of poor mental health in young people. The common factor of these explanations is that they are linked to major societal changes. The potential impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic is an additional cause for concern since young people’s living conditions and everyday life are being profoundly affected. However, the statistical figures showing negative mental health trends among adolescents have been questioned, with claims that they reflect changed attitudes and behaviors in relation to mental health problems, rather than actual changes. In summary, it is difficult to reach an agreement regarding explanatory models and to discover the causes of changes over time in adolescent mental health.

We invite submissions of papers that address the impact of societal changes on adolescent mental health. Below, we have listed keywords, which provide an outline of some possible areas of interest.
