Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Maintaining good oral health and participating in exercise are both strongly associated with preserving and increasing people’s quality of life, well-being and general condition. Independently of the exercise mode, practitioners at various levels may develop oral health-related problems (such as dental or orofacial trauma, teeth clenching, joint disorders, dental erosion and mouth dehydration). When exercising recreationally or competitively, oral health conditions (e.g., dental caries, periodontal disease and wisdom tooth eruption) enhance the risk of body inflammation, infection and muscle injuries, impacting overall health and the expected outcomes of active living. Consequently, integrating oral health screening in a preventive way (and as a part of general health assessment) is essential and highly valuable, both in the earliest stages of exercise practice as well as at the elite level. In this Special Issue, we invite authors to submit exercise- and oral health-related research, particularly focusing on how exercise may impact oral health and the effects of oral health-related problems on exercise practice.

We will also consider manuscripts related to preventive and practical procedures to (i) maintain a disease-free oral cavity and good oral health in exercise practitioners and (ii) impact sports practice enhancement
