Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue “Recent Advances in Polysaccharide-Based Gels” focuses on polysaccharide-based gels as platforms for hydrogel drug delivery, with particular attention to the incorporation and release of active pharmaceutical ingredients and bioactive compounds. The Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews addressing the design, characterization and application of polysaccharide-based gel systems intended for controlled and targeted drug delivery.
Particular emphasis is placed on studies investigating controlled release, targeted release, release kinetics and the relationship between gel structure and drug release behavior. Contributions on mathematical and release modeling are especially encouraged, particularly when modeling is used to interpret release mechanisms, compare formulations, or support the reproducibility of hydrogel drug delivery studies.
The Special Issue also highlights the importance of methodological consistency in evaluating polysaccharide-based gels as drug delivery systems. Studies addressing drug loading, release testing conditions, kinetic analysis and structure–property relationships are within the scope, especially when they contribute to a more systematic understanding of hydrogel drug release.
Another key focus is the effect of sterilization on hydrogel-based drug delivery systems. Contributions investigating how sterilization influences gel structure, incorporated active substances, release kinetics and overall delivery performance are particularly welcome.
By focusing on controlled and targeted release, release kinetics, modeling, sterilization and structure–property relationships, this Special Issue aims to support the development of reliable and scientifically grounded polysaccharide-based gel systems for hydrogel drug delivery.

Gels is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
