Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Forests are crucial for global climate strategies, acting as critical carbon sinks while providing biodiversity and livelihood benefits. The growth of forest carbon markets, both compliance and voluntary, has opened new pathways to finance conservation, afforestation, and sustainable land use. These markets are now at the forefront of international climate policy debates, particularly in the context of achieving net-zero targets and implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Forest carbon markets face significant challenges. Concerns persist about environmental integrity, additionality, permanence, and leakage, as well as the distribution of social and economic benefits. Questions of fairness and inclusivity, especially for local communities and indigenous peoples, remain essential to ensuring credibility and legitimacy. But increasing private sector demand for high-quality credits and evolving national carbon neutrality strategies are reshaping market dynamics and expectations.
This Special Issue brings together diverse perspectives to examine the performance and potential of forest carbon markets. The contributions address methodological innovations in monitoring and verification, governance and regulatory design, financial instruments, and lessons from regional experiences. Together, they provide insights into how forest carbon markets can be scaled responsibly to support climate mitigation while delivering environmental and social co-benefits.
