Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Given the persistently high levels of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, there has been growing interest in carbon dioxide emission reduction strategies, including net-zero and net-negative emission pathways, as potential approaches to mitigating climate change. As discussions around carbon dioxide emission reductions as a mitigation approach have intensified, a wide range of questions concerning their impacts, effectiveness, and potential side effects have been raised within the climate research community. A broad array of factors may influence both mean and extreme climate responses to net-zero and net-negative carbon dioxide emissions, including the trajectory of removal (e.g., abrupt versus gradual), the background climate state or cumulative carbon dioxide emissions prior to implementation, differences in climate model characteristics, and other related factors. Given these diverse and potentially interacting sources of uncertainty, it is essential to establish a robust fundamental understanding of mean and extreme climate responses to inform decision-making and support adaptation to future climate conditions. This Special Issue presents scientifically rigorous investigations into a wide spectrum of mean and extreme climate responses, spanning multiple temporal and spatial scales (e.g., from the global scale to individual regions). The insights derived from the studies compiled in this Special Issue will provide valuable guidance across a broad range of scientific and policy-relevant fields.
