Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The transition toward a sustainable energy economy has become a central priority for governments, markets, and societies in response to climate change, energy security risks, and growing socio-economic inequalities. This SI, titled, “Sustainable Energy Economy: Trends, Drivers, and Challenges”, aims to provide a comprehensive platform for interdisciplinary research that examines how economic systems, policy frameworks, and market mechanisms are reshaping energy production, distribution, and consumption in the context of sustainability transitions. The SI focuses on key global and regional trends shaping the sustainable energy economy, including decarbonization pathways, renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency improvements, electrification, and digitalization of energy systems. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between technological innovation and economic incentives, as well as the evolving role of financial markets, investment instruments, and public–private partnerships in accelerating low-carbon transitions.
Contributions to this SI may include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Economic drivers and barriers of the sustainable energy transition;
- Energy policy design, governance, and regulatory frameworks for low-carbon development;
- Renewable energy markets, pricing mechanisms, and market integration;
- Sustainable energy finance, green bonds, and investment risk assessment;
- Carbon pricing, emissions trading systems, and climate policy effectiveness;
- Energy security, geopolitics, and economic resilience in energy transitions;
- Macroeconomic impacts of decarbonization and energy system restructuring;
- Energy poverty, social equity, and just transition policies;
- Digitalization, data governance, and economic efficiency in energy systems;
- Labor markets, skills development, and human capital for the sustainable energy economy;
- Regional and comparative studies of sustainable energy policies and outcomes;
- Transition risks, stranded assets, and financial stability implications of energy transitions.
Overall, this SI seeks to bridge theory and practice by bringing together empirical studies, comparative analyses, and policy-oriented research. By doing so, it aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how economic governance and policy design can support a just, efficient, and resilient transition toward a sustainable energy economy.
