Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biomass as an energy source plays a key role in the portfolio of renewable energy sources. Currently, about 60% of energy from renewable sources in EU countries is covered by biomass. The push to fulfill the goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, together with efforts of several developed countries to move towards climate neutrality (see e.g. the EU’s strategic goal of attaining climate neutrality by 2050) will further develop the use of renewable energy sources, including biomass, in all their forms. A key aspect of this development is the search for new strategies in the acquisition and use of biomass with an emphasis on both sustainability and economic and energy efficiency. The use of biomass as a sustainable energy source will require addressing several complex issues related to, e.g., sustainable landscape management, environmental risks and benefits of energy crops, economic competitiveness of biomass and biofuels produced from it, land-use efficiency in growing energy crops, technologies for efficient use of waste and residual biomass, etc. Further development of biomass and bioenergy will also require searching for new methods to map biomass potential with regard to ecological, technological, economic and other constraints in relation to the overall strategy of the expected transformation of energy sector towards low-carbon or carbon-free energy.

To share information on new trends in biomass use, this special issue of the international journal Energies (which is an SSCI and SCIE journal, 2019 IF = 2.702) has been proposed, entitled “New trends in biomass use.” This special issue focuses mainly on original research and studies in the above- mentioned areas. The articles that will be selected for this special issue will be subjected to a thorough review procedure with the aim of publishing quality research results and communicating these results to the general professional public.

I would like to invite you to submit an original contribution to this Special Issue. I look forward to the results of your excellent research.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
