Dear Colleagues,
IoT technology is increasingly permeating and integrating deeply into critical sectors such as industrial manufacturing, smart cities, and healthcare, driving the digital transformation of various industries. Correspondingly, identity authentication and access authorization for massive heterogeneous interconnected devices have emerged as an indispensable core cornerstone, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding data security and user privacy, as well as ensuring the trustworthy operation of end-to-end IoT systems. However, IoT authentication and authorization still grapple with the following practical challenges: adapting to resource-constrained edge devices with limited computing and energy resources, overcoming compatibility bottlenecks in multi-protocol heterogeneous networks, and deploying precise defense mechanisms against evolving cyber threats (e.g., identity spoofing, man-in-the-middle attacks, and zero-day exploits).
This Special Issue seeks to feature cutting-edge research findings, innovative technical solutions, and practical application insights in the field of IoT authentication and authorization. Its primary goal is to foster knowledge exchange among researchers, engineers, and practitioners, and to advance technologies in this rapidly evolving field. The key topics for paper submission include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Lightweight authentication and key agreement mechanisms;
- Cross-domain authentication and mutual trust architecture for multi-protocol heterogeneous IoT networks;
- Blockchain-driven decentralized authentication and authorization schemes for IoT;
- Implementation of zero trust architecture (ZTA) in IoT scenarios;
- AI-enabled adaptive anomaly detection for IoT identity;
- Collaborative optimization mechanisms between edge computing and IoT authentication;
- LLM-empowered optimization of IoT authentication protocols.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
