Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues:

The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in agriculture is transforming conventional farming into smart, data-driven systems that improve efficiency, sustainability, and productivity. This Special Issue aims to bring together recent advances, practical implementations, and theoretical developments in the application of IoT for smart agriculture.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, and case studies that explore the design, development, and deployment of IoT-enabled solutions across various domains of agriculture, including crop monitoring, livestock management, irrigation systems, pest control, soil health, and climate-smart farming.

This Special Issue also invites contributions that address the challenges of data connectivity, power efficiency, edge computing, security, interoperability, and the use of AI and machine learning in IoT-based agricultural systems. We are particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches that combine sensor networks, cloud platforms, robotics, and decision-support systems to further advance the field of precision agriculture.

By providing a platform for academic and industrial researchers to share their work, this Special Issue seeks to foster innovation and collaboration in the global effort to build resilient and sustainable food systems through IoT technology.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • IoT architectures and communication protocols for agricultural environments;
  • Smart sensing systems for crop, soil, and livestock monitoring;
  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and LPWAN technologies (e.g., LoRa, NB-IoT);
  • Edge and fog computing for real-time agricultural decision-making;
  • AI and machine learning integration in IoT-based precision farming;
  • IoT-powered irrigation management and climate control systems;
  • Automation and robotics in agriculture using IoT platforms;
  • Energy harvesting and low-power IoT devices for field deployment;
  • Blockchain and secure data sharing in smart agriculture;
  • Data analytics and cloud-based platforms for agricultural insights;
  • Case studies and pilot projects on IoT implementation in farming;
  • Challenges and solutions for large-scale IoT adoption in rural agriculture;
  • Digital twins and simulation frameworks in agricultural IoT;
  • Socioeconomic impacts and sustainability assessments of IoT in agriculture.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
