Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue will explore cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), ubiquitous computing, and smart environments, with a particular focus on how AI-driven innovations are transforming intelligent systems, urban infrastructures, and real-time decision-making processes. It will feature selected papers from the 5th International Conference on Novel and Intelligent Digital Systems (NIDS 2025), which will be held in Athens, Greece, from 24 to 26 September 2025. However, the Special Issue is also open to original research contributions that were not presented at the conference.

In an era of rapidly evolving AI, Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and edge computing, ubiquitous computing systems are playing a crucial role in building intelligent, connected, and adaptive environments. AI-driven techniques enable real-time sensing, data fusion, and autonomous decision-making, fostering new capabilities in smart cities, intelligent transportation, sustainable energy management, and digital health. At the same time, security, privacy, and ethical concerns remain at the forefront of research challenges.

This Special Issue seeks original research articles and comprehensive review papers that explore novel AI methodologies, system architectures, and applications that enhance the intelligence, efficiency, and sustainability of ubiquitous computing systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things (AIoT) for Smart Environments
    • AI-powered IoT frameworks for real-time monitoring and automation
    • Federated learning and distributed intelligence in smart ecosystems
    • Human-AI collaboration in adaptive IoT applications
  • Advanced Big Data Analytics for Real-Time Decision-Making
    • Machine learning and deep learning for large-scale data processing
    • Edge AI and fog computing for low-latency decision systems
    • Predictive analytics and anomaly detection in dynamic environments
  • Security Protocols and Data Privacy in Distributed Computing Systems
    • Secure AI-driven authentication and access control mechanisms
    • Blockchain and decentralized security solutions for smart environments
    • Privacy-preserving AI techniques in ubiquitous computing
  • Development of Smart City Infrastructures and Urban Intelligence Solutions
    • AI-driven traffic management, mobility solutions, and urban planning
    • Sustainable smart grids and intelligent energy management
    • Digital twins and cyber-physical systems for urban environments
  • Innovations in Environmental Informatics and Sustainable Data Applications
    • AI-enhanced climate monitoring and disaster prediction systems
    • Green AI and energy-efficient computing for sustainable solutions
    • Smart water management and resource optimization using AI

This Special Issue aims to bring together interdisciplinary research that spans across the domains of AI, ubiquitous computing, IoT, cybersecurity, sustainability, and human-centered intelligent systems. We encourage contributions that demonstrate novel theoretical insights, system developments, and real-world applications that push the boundaries of smart environments and pervasive computing.

We look forward to your submissions and to advancing the discussion on the future of AI-driven ubiquitous computing and intelligent environments.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Digital is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
